Before Toto was formed The members of the band performed sessions for other musicians. David Paich, the son of session drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggs’ 1975 album Silk Degrees. The group's collaboration led to the formation of Toto in 1976.

Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics for the absence of hit singles. In 1985 the singer Fergie Frederiksen resigned from the group, and the group held auditions for the new frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the group recorded their 1986 album Fahrenheit.

Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band. The band dug through old tapes and recordings to create the album. The album was well-received by fans and Toto embarked on an extensive tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.



Shem von Schröck took over Leland Sklar as drummer during the tour in support of the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In the year 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included live recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.
